For this year’s observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day, former NAACP President Kweisi Mfume gave credit to the late civil rights leader and to Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy, Orlando’s first black City Council member, for making Barack Obama’s presidency possbile.

Orlando residents honored the city’s first African-American elected official Monday morning. Many people said the evetn had special meaning. “The people in this room, the community, the nation, we are just excited and we’re just feeling the momentum of the change,” said resident Ardana Bennett.
